Archangels and Cherubim are spirit beings who are at God's service and endowed with tremendous power and knowledge. They are collectively called angels, the host of heaven (1Kings 22:19, etc.), or "principalities and powers" (see Romans 8:28). Interestingly, the Bible only reveals the names of three such angels.

A picture of these cherubim was also woven into the blue, purple and scarlet curtains used in Israel's wilderness tabernacle (Exodus 26:1, 31, 36:8, 35). Ezekiel's great "wheel in the middle of a wheel" visions, in which he was shown God's throne room, had four cherubim in it. Each of the angels had four faces.

The purpose of the vision was to commission him to serve as a prophet. The sight of God in his glory humbled Isaiah and caused him to reflect on his own sinfulness (Isaiah 6:5). After hearing his confession, one of the Seraphim angels takes a live coal from the temple's altar and touches Isaiah's lips, cleansing him of his sins (verse 7).

"The multiplicity of eyes here in the wheels, and Ezekiel 10:12, in the cherubim themselves, symbolizes the plenitude of intelligent life, the eye being the window through which "the spirit of the living creatures" in the wheels looks forth . . ." (JFB Commentary). The second facet was dreadful and had high rings.

Lucifer, before receiving one of the many names list below (e.g. devil), was one of several created spirit beings in a class of angels known as Cherubim (Ezekiel 28:14). His initial responsibility, which was shared with only one other, was to cover God's throne.

They watch over believers and are interested observers of God's plans on the earth (1Peter 1:12). Before we discuss the angels and their fate, however, we need to cover their current relationship with humans. The fate of all humans who have, or will, live on earth is to possess less abilities, power and authority than angels do (Hebrews 2:7).
