Sep 2, 2020 · Wi, we, wu, yi, and ye aren’t used in everyday Japanese. But why? While all five kana mentioned above are not used in everyday Japanese, wu, ye and yi never existed in the first place. Wu and yi weren’t needed because the Japanese speakers didn’t use those sounds.

Jan 6, 2014 · Although romanized wi and we respectively, they often represented the sounds i~yi and ye (rarely we). For example, 円 was spelled ゑん and historically pronounced yen , hence the spelling "yen" in English.
