How Does the Winged Keel Work? - Improve Sailing
The winged keel is shaped like a wing, with a curved surface on the top and a flat surface on the bottom. The curved surface on the top of the keel creates lift, while the flat surface on the bottom reduces drag. The winged keel is designed to reduce turbulence in the water, which helps to increase the boat's speed and maneuverability.
Winged Keels Pros & Cons - SailNet Community
Jan 23, 2002 · Winged Keels Pros & Cons Here''s my experience based on 13 years of owning a Pearson 27 with a winged keel. Advantage: Shoal draft is hard to beat! Disadvantages: If you go aground, all that area of the wing will stick like glue to the bottom. You can''t heel the boat to reduce draft -- that makes it worse in fact.
Wing Keel - how does it work? | SailNet Community
Nov 12, 2010 · The winged keel is not for adding downforce to a boat. No point in lowering the waterline as you go faster. I would buy the reduction in tip vortices but I am not sure how much of a return you would get at 5 kts. On street cars the wing on the trunk is a spoiler to spoil the lift as cars go faster. It helps to keep the rear wheels on the ground.
Pros/Cons of Wing Keel - SailNet Community
Apr 5, 2006 · Pros/cons of winged keels CB, I know this is a late post but this may assist people reading it even now. All the posts to date have made valid points. And your query is not uncommon. Ultimately the decision is determined by what you want and where you sail. Sorry to be corny. I have sailed on winged keel yachts and found them to handle well.
Fin vs bulb vs wing keels | SailNet Community
Oct 11, 2012 · The Aussie winged keel worked well in conjunction with the upside down profile of that keel and the extra long tip chord with it's vortex problems. When I designed the Islander 34 we did a 5.5' draft wing keel and a 7' draft straight fin. Islander built one of each as hulls 1 and 2. They were launched the same day with sails from the same ...
Winged keel - SailNet Community
May 1, 2013 · For the OP, the only advantage of a winged keel is the ability to manage short water. If your primary sailing area or intended use doesn't constrain you, I'd go fin. If you plan to cruise the Chesapeake Bay, ICW and/or Florida waters you're going to be more limited with a deeper fin than shoal draft or wing keel.
Wing vs Fin Keel - SailNet Community
May 16, 2004 · I owned a Pearson 27 (draft 3''4") with a winged keel for 15 years, and last fall bought a Pearson 33 (draft 4''2") with a winged keel. Obviously I like the wing or I wouldn''t have bought the 33. My experience has been that with the shoal draft, you''re a lot less likely to run aground to begin with.
Catalina 22 swing vs wing keel - SailNet Community
Jul 18, 2008 · The swing keels on Catalina 22s are fine. Maybe not in a boat that is moored in salt water, but other than that, no real worries. Sure, they require some attention, but nothing extraordinary. Certainly, the trailering would be much easier with a swing keel. A good place for you to look around is Catalina Direct: Welcome to Catalina Direct Online
