Jul 14, 2010 · Hand-built by Japanese boutique maker Wavac Audio Lab, the SH-833 isn't new—it was reviewed in Stereophile in 2004—but when I saw that price tag, I knew I had to include it here. The SH-833 is what's known as a single-ended, directly heated triode power amp.

Click to expand... ...well, not entirely; there's quite a few designers building 833 based amps with various input and driver combinations - KT66 and 300B - amongst them, so it's surprising the prices haven't skyrocketed of late.

Dec 18, 2003 · It may do 150W, but neither of two 833 SE Amp's I heard (Metropolis and Wavac) sounded especially good. Yes, they deliver a lot of power, but using a suitably good speaker I(Koechel Horns) I found the Wavac EC300B infinitly superior to the 833.

Here you will see an 833A tube connected up with vice grips and hose clamps. The chassis on the left is the power supply from an old Motorola public safety transmitter. It puts out 1500 volts at 500 mA. The box in the center is the 845SE amplifier. I am using it (except for the output tubes and transformers) for this experiment.
