The Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar is an American passenger transport aircraft of the World War II era, developed as part of the Model 10 Electra family, specifically from the Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra.

During WWII the military bought or pressed into service all kinds of transport aircraft that could be useful. Lockheed Lodestars were smaller and faster than the Douglas DC-3 aircraft that had become the industry standard.

The C-60 is a twin-engine transport based on the Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar. During World War II, the Army Air Forces used the aircraft for training and for transporting personnel and freight. First flown in 1940, the Model 18 was originally designed as a successor to the Lockheed Model 14 and the earlier Model 10 Electra.

By the end of the war, an additional 346 C-60s were constructed for the Army Air Force and used as transports, paratroop carriers, and glider tugs. The aircraft's long range and large payload made it a favorite among high-ranking officers. As its reputation grew, aircraft were delivered to the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

Between 1942 and 1943, the USAAC acquired 324 C-60A s, 18-seat paratroop transports. Some of these aircraft were passed on to the UK (RAF versions were known as the Lodestar I (C-56), Lodestar IA (C-59), and Lodestar II (C-60), and most were operated as medium-range transports.)

Lockheed C-60A is a twin-engine transport based on the Model 18 Lodestar. It was specifically built for military services as cargo, VIP & paratroop transport.

The Lockheed C-60 was the designation given to a mix of impressed Model 18 Lodestars and versions of the aircraft that were ordered specifically for the USAAF, and was by far the most numerous military version of the Lodestar. The Lodestar was similar in layout to most Lockheed transport aircraft of the inter-war years.
