On 7 December 1941, eighteen SBD Dauntless scout bombers of squadrons VS-6 and VB-6 arrived over Pearl Harbor during the attack and, although surprised, immediately went into action in defense of the naval base. Scouting Six lost six planes during the attack, and Bombing Six lost one, killing eight airmen and wounding two others.

On Thursday, June 4, 1942, Bombing Squadron Six participated in an attack on a Japanese force consisting of four aircraft carriers, several battleships or heavy cruisers, and a number of destroyers, about 150 miles northwest of Midway Island.

The success of these bombs became evident during pivotal battles, such as the Battle of Midway, where U.S. Navy SBD-2 and SBD-3 Dauntless dive-bombers from VB-6 used these armor-piercing bombs to devastating effect.
