By default Windows does not include codecs for HEVC, VP9 and other common video formats. We strongly recommend to install the Standard package and use the included MPC-HC player. That works much better than Windows Media Player. It also plays practically everything, while WMP is limited to a small set of supported audio and video formats.

3D Video. The codec pack contains a plugin for decoding H.264 MVC 3D Video. To properly watch such videos you should use the included MPC-HC player (64-bit version) and select Madvr as the video renderer. Outputting 3D video to your monitor/TV requires Windows 8.x/10 (or Windows 7 with a modern NVIDIA GPU).

Mar 20, 2025 · On Windows 10/11 you can install some additional Media Foundation codecs for WMP. This will allow you to play some additional video formats, such as HEVC and VP9. Rename your file from so it has extension .video instead of .mp4/.mkv This forces WMP to use the DirectShow codecs from K-Lite instead of the Media Foundation codecs from Windows.

The Basic package only contains DirectShow codecs. It does not include a player. It is compatible only with players that use DirectShow codecs.
