I work at a VW dealership in the US, we already have 3 2020 GTIs on the ground. Like you said, OP should be looking for the 2019 GTI anyway. Great incentives on them (at least in my region) and the 6-year/72k-mile warranty is a great value. There won’t be a 2020 Golf R, and we should be getting the refreshed Mk8 Golf/GTI/R in 2021.

Jan 23, 2023 · S trim (base) is best value. It's very well loaded for the MK8 generation. Pricing is around $31-32k new SE trim (mid trim) adds larger screen, plus keyless entry, sunroof and option for leather seats (but I think plaid seats are nicer) - $36-37k

I've worked in the auto industry in a past life and understand a thing or two about product reliability and it gives me pause when reading how CR readers blasts the reliability of the GTI.

The "Golf GTI" is referring to the 7th generation of the GTI (2015+) If you're looking at specifically 2012 model years. A 2012 Golf is the basic economy car. 5 speed manual or 6 speed traditional automatic (torque converter) with a 2.5L 5 cylinder motor.

Jan 23, 2024 · A mObridge tech lives a few minutes away and confirmed that the module is NOT compatible with the 2023-2024 GTI/Golf R and that it was wrong on the website. Serious bummer. My installer, myself and that tech got under the dash to see what we were dealing with. The 2023 GTI/Golf R doesn’t use the MOST protocol anymore.

Jul 19, 2023 · Update for anyone who stumbles upon this: I put an oil pressure gauge on the car over the weekend and found that the pressures are totally within spec. Drove it around under the same conditions that usually triggers the light and found that the oil pressure was steady at 23 psi, and occasionally dipped for a split second to maybe 20 psi then back to 23 when accelerating.
