El VAP-40E es un posicionador de cargas externas de propulsión eléctrica (a diferencia del VAP-40D diésel) adquiridos por el Ejército del Aire y del Espacio por primera vez. Su misión es transportar, posicionar, cargar y descargar cargas externas de hasta 4.000 libras (1.814 kg.) bajo las alas de los aviones de combate.
