Chuuk Lagoon, previously Truk Atoll, is an atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. It lies about 1,800 kilometres (970 nautical miles) northeast of New Guinea and is part of Chuuk State within the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

Truk Lagoon was the site of Operation Hailstone in February 1944 when the United States launched an air assault on the Japanese fleet anchored in the lagoon. The attacks led to the sinking of numerous ships and aircraft, creating a submerged graveyard that is now a key part of Truk Lagoon’s identity.

Looks can be deceiving, but once you try the food, the roads will just be another bump on the rod. Fresh seafood and nice smiling people.

Oct 19, 2017 · During the initial raids on Truk Lagoon in February 1944, there were estimates of up to 2,000 Japanese casualties due to the sinkings. One ship, Aikoku Maru, met its end when a massive explosion ripped apart the entire forward half of the 500-foot-long vessel. More than 700 army personnel and crew were killed instantly in the grisly explosion.

The U.S. Navy's carrier strike on February 17 and 18, 1944, coordinated with an assault on Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands, seriously impaired Truk's air force, destroyed virtually all Japanese shipping in the lagoon, and heavily damaged land installations.
