Thomas Tallis (/ ˈtælɪs /; [2] also Tallys or Talles; c. 1505 – 23 November 1585 [n 1]) was an English composer of High Renaissance music. His compositions are primarily vocal, and he occupies a primary place in anthologies of English choral music.

The tallit (tall-EET) or tallis (TALL-us) is a large rectangular shawl made of wool, cotton or synthetic fibers. In each of the four corners of the shawl are strings tied in a particular pattern, called tzitzit. The origin of the tzitzit is biblical:

Thomas Tallis (c. 1505 – 23 November 1585) was an English composer. Tallis flourished as a church musician in 16th century England. He occupies a primary place in anthologies of English church music, and is considered among the best of England's early composers. He is honoured for his original voice in English musicianship.

Tallis was best known as a composer of choral music for both the Latin and reformed rites, but he also wrote prolifically for solo voice, strings, and keyboard. Tallis wrote nine tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter of 1567-1578.
