TGI is the common name for a TJI, because it rolls of the tongue easier. It is a Truss Joist I-beam. They come in a variety of depths, typically 9-1/2" to 16" and they come in different levels ...
TGI Span - Fine Homebuilding
Aug 23, 2007 · Any floor joist is analyzed as a beam, one whose loading is figured from the tributary area (sorry for the engineer-speak) of floor load being carried, which is of course dependent on joist spacing. Thus, the TJI230 11.875 will likely deliver higher "performance" (i.e. less deflection, less vibration) than otherwise, the design being for a ...
TGI vs. 2x12? - Fine Homebuilding
May 9, 2001 · I am building a wood shop with a crawl space and a wood floor, 32×75. My architect designed the floor with TGI joists on 12″ centers, but I was wanting 2×12 on 16″ centers. Which is stronger, TGI or 2x12s, if they are spaced the same? Is there much cost difference? I will use 3/4″ subfloor with 3/4″ wh. oak flooring and radiant floor ...
How to Frame an I-Joist Roof - Fine Homebuilding
If you use this hanger, you have to pad out the web of the I-joist with 3-in.-wide pieces of plywood or OSB of a thickness that matches the width of the flanges. I attached the ridge end of my rafters with Simpson VPA Variable-Pitch Connectors (about $8 each), which can accommodate roof pitches from 3:12 to 12:12.
Cantilevering TJI joists - Fine Homebuilding
Nov 2, 2007 · On a cantaleiver I did a few years back they wanted an LVL so often in the layout instead of a joist, corners and every 6 ft after that. TJI Joists vs. Dimensional Lumber - Fine Homebuilding
May 28, 1999 · *In allmost every case I have found TJI's to be cheaper especially with spans over 12' if you include labor. Even more of a savings if you have to return much twisted 2X stock. Going with 24" o.c. where the loads allow helps too. A deep joist at 24" is usually cheaper than shallower joists at 16" o.c. I allways glue the sheathing.Ron
span rating of TGI floor joists? - Fine Homebuilding
Oct 17, 2001 · look on joist and find out who made them. then contact the manufacturer for span rating. I joists differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. are they laminated or solid top and bottom, plywood or osb? probably won't span 22 feet clear no matter who makes them unless you go to 12" centers. even then, it will be bouncy.
Span of TJI joists w/ no center support - Fine Homebuilding
Mar 3, 2008 · I'm thinking I'd rather not go with a wider joist... i'm thinking probably better to go with a center beam with vertical column support. That way the span of the 9.5" joist is only 9 feet (not 18"). I'm just concerned about the deflection. To go with a wider TJi, i'd have to start altering the foundation wall heights.. whereas some TJi's are 9.5 ...
