Feb 26, 2010 · The MA-R was the first premium TDK metal tape to use a special shell and top grade metal tape. Then in around 1986 it went to a revised MA-XG with similar design. Then in the early 90s it went to a green shelled MA-XG that was a plastic type of material.

Jun 18, 2009 · I was just given a new, unused 1979 TDK MA-R C60 cassette, Type IV. I'd like to use it, problem is the shell is solid aluminum by the feel and look of it. It has no cut-outs for my Denon DRM-740 to tell it's a metal tape.

Jul 3, 2014 · I had the good luck of picking up a TDK MA-R 90 recently. It was left inside a cassette deck that I purchased on the auction site (bonus!) and sounded wonderful (had Dark Side of the Moon recorded on it).

Jul 3, 2014 · TDK MA-R or SA-X Fuji, BASF and Maxwell are ok for general recording, but if you really wanted the best sound then the TDKs were the only choice for me.

Mar 7, 2011 · I find, that if you stick to quality tapes, Maxell and TDK, and good lengths (nothing over 90 mins), you should get similar performance. However, to optimize the performance, I recommend that you bias and record cal for whatever tape you use.
