The initial two were built by the Southern Railway (SR) at Ashford Works in 1940–41 and 1945 and were numbered CC1 and CC2 [1] - the Southern Railway latterly preferring French practice for locomotive numbers which also gave an indication of the wheel arrangement.

The Southern Railway also built two mainline electric locomotives numbered CC1 and CC2. They were renumbered 20001 and 20002 after nationalisation. A third locomotive, 20003, was built in 1948.

The photo shows a lovely model of CC1 in 5" gauge made by Michael Ennis, completed around 1997, and powered by four car wiper motors. Finished in Southern malachite green, with yellow speed whiskers, it received a highly commended certificate at the M.E. Exhibition.
