The SD70M has a wide nose and a large comfort cab (officially known as the "North American Safety Cab"), allowing crew members to ride more comfortably inside of the locomotive than the older standard cab designs.

EMD delivered 25 SD70M's to SP in June-August 1994. These were to be used on the "I-5 corridor", between Los Angeles, California, and Portland, Oregon. Usually used in pairs, they were tested on other areas of the system, but returned to 'their' original territory.

Delivered to th SP in June of 1994, these two units are the very first production SD70Ms (after the demonstrators). They were later renumbered 3795 and 3794 by Uncle Pete, for whom they soldier on today.

Groups was led by former SP 9800, the first production SD70M, was UP Train MNLTR 04. A car was almost pacing the train and barely cleared our shots! Q192's engines show up at Opelika to pick up a SD40-2 from Q619 to get the rest of 192 up the hill that's 20 miles to the south. 3974 died, leaving 192 with one working unit.
