The EMD SD80MAC was a 5,000 horsepower (3.7 MW) C-C diesel-electric locomotive. It was powered by a 20-cylinder version of EMD's 710G prime mover, and was the second diesel locomotive by GM-EMD to use a V20 engine, since EMD's SD45 series.

Dec 16, 2024 · The SD80MAC is virtually identical to the SD70 series except that it is rated at 5,000 hp instead of the SD70’s 4,300 horsepower, and as mentioned above its rear flared radiator sets forward of the rear of the locomotive. The unit is also very rare, albeit it is relatively new.

In January 1996 Conrail added a brand new locomotive breed to their roster. This new locomotive was the AC traction, 5,000 hp EMD SD80MAC and was the first model to use a 20-cylinder prime-mover since the SD45 series and Conrail's first and only independent order for AC power.

The EMD SD80MAC is a six-axle, 5,000-horsepower, AC-traction diesel locomotive built from 1995 to 1996. Only 30 examples were ever built, all purchased by Conrail. Today, all were owned by Norfolk Southern.

Many operational, several retired due to wrecks, one preserved. The EMD SD70 is a series of diesel-electric locomotives produced by the US company Electro-Motive Diesel. This locomotive family is an extension and improvement of the EMD SD60 series.

The SD80MAC was the first EMD locomotive to utilize a V20 engine since the SD45 series. For Conrail, the SD80MACs were the first AC-traction diesel locomotives on the roster. These locomotives became Conrail's choice for handling long and heavy coal trains on their Pittsburgh and Boston Lines, also over their Allegheny Mountain routes in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and New York.

Apr 13, 2025 · SD80MAC and SD90MAC are 80 ft 2 in, with a thicker frame resulting in higher walkways than the SD70 series (about a 3-inch difference). From the SD35 to the SD70 series, there were also increases in frame thickness, but a bit smaller. SD70ACe and SD70M-2 are on an SD70MAC frame that's thickened to be like the SD80MAC and SD90MAC.
