The EMD SD50 is a 3,500- horsepower (2,610 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division. It was introduced in May 1981 as part of EMD's "50 Series"; production ceased in January 1986.

Heavy gauge steel cover, selection of locking options, and specialized wiring for prisons and detention applications. Comes standard with SmartTouch 720 Option. Available with corrections upgrade, provides a mount for customer supplied deadbolt type lock on the cover. Zinc coated cover and chassis for enhanced corrosion resistance.

It's 16 cylinder 645F3B engine could be rated between 3,300 HP and 3,500 HP. It was the last engine to use the 645 engine, the 710 being introduced on the subsequent SD60.

on 12-14-2008, SD50F’s 5400 and 5444 were retired. This brings to a close the SD50F saga on CN. However, with alot of the units going to scrap, a half o dozen or so are being sent to the UP to pay back Horsepower hours. Also, 3 or 4 of the odd model have been sold to the Dakota, Missouri Valley and Western Railroad.
