In ancient Indian astronomy, the pattern of stars known in the West as the Big Dipper (part of the larger constellation of Ursa Major) is called Saptarshi, with the seven stars representing seven rishis: Vashistha, Marichi, Pulastya, Pulaha, Atri, Angiras and Kratu.
