Dec 17, 2019 · Unlike other herds that trekked to the foothills to wait out the harsh upper-elevation winters and returned to alpine meadows come spring, these elk had exchanged their migratory habits for permanent residence on Rabbit Mountain.

The easternmost point of the foothills in Boulder County, the Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain is rich with human history, geological features, and an abundance of plants and wildlife. The park was closed Monday and Tuesday from Oct. 7 through Jan. 31 for elk management through limited hunting.
