The R46 is a New York City Subway car model that was built by the Pullman Standard Company from 1975 to 1978 for the IND / BMT B Division. They replaced all remaining R1–9 fleet cars and General Electric -powered R16s, and some R10s.

The car types, which were part of the MTA NYCT GOH program, are the IRT Redbirds (R26, R28, R29, R33, R33S, R36), as well as IND/BMT cars (R30 GE, R32, R38, R40, R40A, R42, R44, and R46). These cars were rebuilt between 1985 and 1993.

Why was the braking system changed on the -44s but not the M-1s? The controller stand on the pre-GOH -46s almost looked like the dashboard of a space ship, with numerous buttons, lights, switches, dials, and what-have-you. The controller handle was very distinctive as well.

However, I'd like clarification as to which married pairs had a drawbar between them and which had a conventional coupler between them, as well what the couplers were like on the R44's and R46's before overhaul. Feb 27, 2021 · So there are at least three rollsigns that the R40-R46 class wears: The most common rollsign: 13-42-5790. Printed in 2001, is compatible with the R40-R46 class, and is all Helvetica with the exception of an Akzidenz-Grotesk bullet.
