Nov 14, 2006 · Pre-catalytic convertors = precats. They are a matrix of ceramic coated in various metals that process and chemically convert certain exhaust gases to what should be less harmful ones. They use the cycles of lean and rich that the oxygen sensor creates to recharge the matrix for conversion to take place.

Pre-catalytic converters work to prevent some of the gas emissions before the emissions enter into the main catalytic converter. This also prevents potential damage to the main catalytic converter.

Over the past couple of decades, newer engines have proven to have pre-cats more durable due to better materials and engine control systems.

Dec 17, 2010 · Pre-cat removal is simply a matter of attacking the pre-cat matrix with hammer & screwdriver until its broken into lumps small enough to pass through the lower exhaust port. The ceramic material crumbles very easily.

Aftermarket Cats – These are 3rd party parts that are usually a cheaper option when repairing vehicles. These aftermarket parts will be valued less when you are looking to scrap them.
