Do the AOS while in there. You are looking at an 11 year old car and there are parts (plastic and rubber primarily) that go bad from age as well as miles.

To answer your question directly: the IMS issues existed until Porsche did away with it upon the introduction of the completely new Direct Injection engine fir the 2009 model year.

There have been reports of IMS failure in a few thousand miles to a hundred plus thousand miles and up to the 2006 year when the whole IMS part of the motor was changed it seems to be a crap shoot.

Jun 1, 2012 · The IMS though is a different story. (OK - IMS seal leaks can occur, but like the RMS these are harmless and easy to fix.) IMS *bearing* failures are a real problem. The bearing that supports the intermediate shaft was poorly designed and prone to failure. It gives little to no warning before it fails and when it does fail it destroys your motor.

I took apart the clutch and looking at the IMS cover is the shallow one. I am assuming the IMS bearing is a double row. The market is flooded with a mix of IMS replacement parts.

The problem seems to have been that when the cars are only driven a very little bit (like 1000 miles/yr) the grease dries out. Porsche changed the bearing, eliminating the inner seal, so engine oil gets into the bearing lubrucating it.

It’s not an issue on .2 (9A1 engine) since it doesn’t have an IMS. It’s permanently fixable on .1 engines by running an oil line into the IMS. Bore scoring is far more frequent of a problem on .1 cars.
