Oct 22, 2007 · Thru out northern MN and WI the mills that are the predominant buyers of pulp and most of the loggers that supply the pulp have lumped all aspen into one category that is commonly called popple. It does include Big Tooth and Quaking or Trembling Aspen as well as Cottonwood along with other variations like Balm of Gilead.

Nov 24, 2012 · In your climate, there's gonna be a lot of days you just want a quick morning fire to take the chill off, and that's it for the day. Popple is great for that kind of burning. Around here, it's also a very common wood to be found in $5 bundles at the gas station, makes a nice campfire wood, just need a lot of it for an all-night party.

Pricing on good logs is great, you will want to know where they logs are going be cause the various mills desire different lengths. Some mills want a 14' log others 16' and exporters always like 10' logs.

Mar 19, 2025 · Personally, I dont know if I would go with the dovetailed corner style with such a soft wood as Aspen. Maybe a passed corner system would be more suited. I would foresee the dovetails deteriorating and creeping easily with this wood. With passed corners, you place the end grain out away from the joints, so water does not penetrate as well.

Feb 11, 2005 · The neighbor next door paid $360 a cord cut to length and delivered. I suspenct he got stung buying it by the face cord. He paid $1800 for 5 cords of wood. I paid $1680 for 14.5 cords, treelength. I got mine all cut up in 5 days and piled. Looks like I can buck wood cheeper than the stovewood cutter, even at $15/hr = $600 for 40 hrs work.

Jan 22, 2025 · One wood that kind of defies the numbers is tamarack (eastern larch). It is denser than many softwoods, but more than that the resin in that wood makes it burn HOT. It is the wood of choice for many up here with outdoor wood stoves (me included). One key aspect, I think, is the low efficiency of OWB's.
