Jul 27, 2002 · The way I understand it, a pony motor is a small motor that gets the larger main engine started. How does it work specifically though? I have heard about vintage tractors with this feature, but have always wondered how it works.

The pony engine is a 10 HP gas which originally was started with a pull rope. Latter electric starter motors were installed on some pony engines. The pony engine warmed up the diesel engine with it's exhaust gases, or in some cases it's cooling water.

Once started, the pony was "clutched" into the primary engine...the diesel..and, in turn, the diesel was set in motion...a parasite upon the pony until the diesel actually began combustion.

The pony motors were small engines used to start the big two cylinder diesel engines. The first pony was an opposed two cylinder used on the Model R. On the rest of the diesel tractors, Deere changed to a V-4.
