Apr 16, 2012 · The locals informed me that it was because Poland's ascension agreement with the EU prohibited Polish wine from being sold in the common market. Apparently the French, Italian, and German winemakers were concerned about competing with Polish wine. That combined with avoiding paying taxes makes buying Polish wine like bootlegging.

Dec 31, 2009 · RE the herring, what you can buy in the States in jars is not suitable for this kind of dish, unless you can find it not in wine sauce. If you ask the guy in your local supermarket in the fish section, he might be willing to stock packaged herring. I have done that and had good luck. I think you can forget getting salted herring from a barrel.

Jun 2, 2014 · If you haven't drunk any, you may be interested to know that it's white wine, very much in the German style (the wine growing region was in Germany pre-1945). There is (and your local Polish grocer may stock it) red wine with herbs and various chemicals in, made for heating up. That's just mixed and labelled in Poland though.
