Pikmin 4 has 8 pikmin types, 9 counting glow pikmin. Being expected to carry 11-13 of each type leads to extremely underwhelming numbers. They're gonna suck at completing every task. This was why Purple and White Pikmin weren't in 3's story mode. 20 of 5 different types was much more reasonable.

Yeah, absolutely pikmin 1 is by far the most balanced game pikmin-wise, but someone's gotta be the worst type, reds are better in combat generally, and blues are more often required. Still a great type though.

The problem with more Pikmin is finding a use for them that works them in well in an RTS game. As things go on other Pikmin become useless unless forced. Yellows were the “worst” type in Pikmin 1. Reds were made useless and Blues almost useless in Pikmin 2. Blues were worthless in Pikmin 3 and Reds were just barely overshadowed by Rocks.
