The Passover is the Jewish celebration of God’s liberating the Israelites from Egyptian slavery in 1513 B.C.E. God commanded the Israelites to remember that important event each year on the 14th day of the Jewish month Abib, which was later called Nisan.

Passover was followed by seven days of the Festival of Unfermented Cakes, Nisan 15-21. Passover commemorates the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt and the ‘passing over’ of their firstborn when Jehovah destroyed the firstborn of Egypt. Seasonally, it fell at the beginning of the barley harvest. —Ex 12:14, 24-47; Le 23:10.

The Passover was a celebration held just once a year, on the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan. To calculate that date, the Jews evidently waited for the spring equinox. This is the day when there are approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

The Scriptures compare Jesus’ sacrifice to that of the Passover lamb. ( 1 Corinthians 5: 7, 8 ) The Passover was observed once each year. ( Exodus 12: 1-6; Leviticus 23:5 ) Likewise, the Memorial of Jesus’ death was observed once each year by the early Christians, c and Jehovah’s Witnesses follow that Bible-based pattern.
