The Pennsylvania Railroad's class A5s was the most powerful class of 0-4-0 steam locomotives. The Pennsylvania Railroad built 47 in its Juniata Shops between 1916–1924. They were all retired by 1957. One is preserved at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Apr 14, 2025 · I have gone through two copies of KEYSTONE STEAM & ELECTRIC by William Edson. It gives PRR construction numbers and railroad numbers. I have been using these for research since they came out in 1974! Here is the info you remembered: PRR 643 - assigned to the following - (G), H1, B4a, and finally A5s. Hope that helps!! The class A5 were a class of 0-4-0 switcher steam locomotives built by Altoona Works for the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1916 to 1924. The A5's were a development of Pennsy's A class, which started in 1885 with the A1 and A2, formerly the Q class. Only one member of the class No. 94, has survived into preservation.

Feb 2, 2003 · A5s: 47 of these were built at Altoona, 1916-1924. Belpaire firebox, piston valve s, Walschaerts valve gear. Possibly the last 0-4-0 locomotives built for a major American railroad, and used on trackage that could not take a locomotive with a longer wheelbase.

Jun 8, 2020 · The A5s was basically the largest 0-4-0 built, mainly for street, industrial, and dockside switching duty where the wheelbase of an 0-6-0 was too long.
