Dec 20, 2024 · The SW1 featured a 600 horsepower prime mover and retained Electro-Motive's signature short carbody of just 44-feet with tapering near the cab for improved visibility. The SW1's most recognizable feature is the large sandbox just under the grill. Its location is unique to this particular model.

The SW1 was a 660 horsepower switcher, easily recognized by its distinctive sandbox below the front radiator. PRR and NYC originally purchased these diminutive engines, with ex-Central units numbered in the 8400's, while ex-Pennsy units were in the 8500's.

Both front and rear trucks are powered and a heavy diecast frame (model weighs 11 ounces) insures plenty of pulling power. A skew-wound, five-pole can motor with dual flywheels and all-wheel electrical pick-up insures smooth operation at any speed.
