Most cars rebuilt from 4 wheel wood underframe classes. There were Lines West (of Pittsburgh) cabins rebuilt in Lines West shops, starting 1914. These Lines West rebuilds into class N6a and N6b were concurrent with Altoona production of the N5 all-steel cabins for Lines East.

The N6b, which was spotted on the Chartiers branch by eye-witnesses, has two positions of the cupola. One was centered on the car's body, and one was positioned more toward one end of the car.

Introduced in 1913 to comply with tougher state laws mandating caboose safety, the Pennsylvania's Class N6B wood cabin cars (cabooses) lead long lives, remaining in regular service into the 1960s. The cars were designed to clear eastern tunnels with a unique narrow cupola with tapered sides and a pronounced roof arch.
