Class A was the 0-4-0 type, an arrangement best suited to small switcher locomotives (known as "shifters" in PRR parlance). Most railroads abandoned the 0-4-0 after the 1920s, but the PRR kept it for use on small industrial branches, especially those with street trackage and tight turns.

Nov 12, 2010 · The H8/9 class would make an excellent starter set engine, bet it would sell like gang busters on the east coast. Not everybody has 36"+ radius curves for huge steam to look and run good.

Their boilers were worked hard, but contained much higher percentages of superheater area in their combined heating surface totals and their boilers were pressed a full 90 psi (6.2 bar) higher.
