"Pay to win" is an overused buzzword that lost all meaning. As far as I remember it rose to prominence during the wave of F2P MMO that came around WoW release. The expression P2W (Pay to win) was coined by players as an opposition to the claimed Free to play. Understanding the game is free to play but to be good you have to pay.

It’s another money-making scheme, it’s a dick move depending on the game and specific player, but it’s completely different than getting locked out of something you can ONLY get by paying, which will put others in an unfair competitive disadvantage.

May 22, 2020 · Actually, it is the most accepted take on the meaning of P2W. Of course winning is subjective but it's safe to assume that for the vast majority of the audience, winning entails aspects such as PvP or clearing end game PvE, staying competitive in some regard.

WoW is P2W because you can buy level boosts and mount. FF14 is P2W because you can buy story skip. BDO is P2W because you can buy pets, weight, inventory or costumes to sell (costume argument is stupid because it isn’t realistic for 99.9% of the player base). OSRS is P2W because it has members. ESO is P2W because it has a premium pack.
