The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category.

The first BMW M5, produced from the end of 1984 and presented to the press in early 1985, was the segment founder for a hitherto unknown type of car: luxurious high-performance limousines with a marked dynamic character.

The first BMW M5 was introduced for the 1986 model year. Based on the E28 5 Series, the M5 featured various mechanical improvements to the drivetrain, as well as being fitted with a BMW M1 derived engine. When the M5 was launched, it was the world's fastest production sedan.
