Apr 10, 2025 · Polished cut surface of NWA 2965. The rock is ~8 cm in width. Rubin (2016) reclassified Al Haggounia 001 and paired specimens as "vesicular, incompletely melted, EL chondrite impact melt rock [s]." NWA 2965 is likely paired, and is therefore also reclassified.

History and physical characteristics: Hundreds of fragments that weigh >100 kg were collected in the Algerian desert in 2004. Small fragments (~100 g) are commonly weathered to a dark brown with very dark weathering veins. Large pieces may retain portions of weathered fusion crust with only moderate to lightly weathered interiors.

NWA 2965 EL6/7 Enstatite Metachondrite. Shown are examples of the "Ghost Chondrules". One year ago, it was one of the rarest materials known. Now, (due to one good size find?) it seems to be showing up under nearly a dozen names that may be paired.

It has absolutely no evidence of chondrules.

First discovered in 2004 this meteorite originates from the large meteorite shower that occurred approximately 23,000 years ago. NWA 2965 experienced so much weathering (terrestrialization) during its lengthy stay on Earth, at first glance it does not appear to be a meteorite.

I have looked at thin sections of NWA 2965, both the brown and the gray/blue lithologies, and of an unnumbered probable pairing, also both brown and gray/blue lithologies, and found chondrules in all - ten sections total.
