May 19, 2017 · If the electrician doesn't think it can support a 50A circuit though, ill relent and get a Wall connector on a smaller circuit. even 24A charging will fulfill my daily needs. I don't want to go that route though because i will be living there temporary, so a NEMA 14-50 makes more sense for temporary solutions vs long term (with the wall connector).

As for my NEMA 14-50 install, the car has been happily charging every night for the past two weeks with no further incidents. But I did install a smoke detector in the garage directly above the breaker box for some extra peace of mind.

May 15, 2018 · I have the Nema 14-50 wall connector and I noticed that the warmer the weather got the more it started to overheat to a point now that I have to use the included cable to charge my car because the 14-50 over heats way too easy. Same plug is fine with the included car adapter. I tried dialing down the amps etc.. and still no go.

And I added a ground wire since the old receptacle was hot-hot-neutral while this 14-50 also has a ground.

Jul 7, 2020 · The outlet isn't the problem in most all of these situations. If this high-dollar receptacle had been used but installed in the same fashion it would have melted too. There's no 14-50R that can withstand continued 80% draw when the leads aren't properly landed.

Aug 2, 2017 · A nema 14-50 is designed for a 50 AMP. circuit breaker and the allowable current draw is recommended to be 40 Amps or lower (a 20% safety current reduction). To draw 40 Amps, I believe 6 AWG wire is recommended. For 32 amps, 8 AWG wire is okay. The "smart Nema 14-50 adapter" supplied by Tesla will limit the current draw to 40 Amps automatically.
