According to the most recent renumbering plan, the C&NW GP7s will be renumbered into the UP 400-496 series, and the C&NW GP9s will be renumbered into the UP 497-505 series. However, due to their age, plus the fact that they would be some of the oldest units on UP's roster, these units won't last long with Union Pacific.

N&W GP9 #754 is the trailing unit in this consist at Leipsic, OH on May 23, 1977. The westbound combined "Banner Blue-Wabash Cannonball" is seen arriving at St Louis Union Station after its journey via Delmar Station west of downtown St Louis on May 1, 1966.

This C&NW GP9 is seen in the engine terminal in North Little Rock, AR on Aug. 4, 1996. This GP38 is seen in the "bottoms" of Kansas City, MO on Aug. 8, 1988. This commuter train is seen leaving Northwestern Station in Chicago on Aug. 24, 1969.

Jan 14, 2025 · Nice color slide of blue & gold Norfolk Western GP9 built by EMD for Nickel Plate in August of 1956. Upon the merger of NKP & NW, it was renumbered to 2484. Eventually retired on 3/25/82 and traded to GE later in 1982.

Norfolk & Western GP9 Saved For Preservation
Aug 20, 2024 · The Roanoke Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society has saved a Norfolk & Western GP9 that was once part of the fleet of diesel locomotives that replaced steam in passenger service. On August 18, the chapter announced it had acquired GP9 514.
