Jul 11, 2023 · MUNCIE, Ind. — Nickle Plate Road SD9 No. 358 is nearing the end of a lengthy process of restoration to operation by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, with Progress Rail returning the locomotive to its appearance as built in 1957.

Jul 11, 2023 · Locomotive 358 is one of 20 SD9s built in the late 1950s that helped bring about the end of steam on the NKP. Designated as “Special Duty” locomotives, the SD9-type locomotive helped end the era of steam power thanks to their reduced maintenance costs.

Nickel Plate Road 759 is a preserved S-2 class 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio as a member of the S-2 class for the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, commonly referred to as the "Nickel Plate Road".

In 1934, the NKP took delivery of fifteen of the new "Berkshires" from the American Locomotive Company. These new locomotives were perfectly suited for the NKP and with them they set record after record.

In service, the three-axle Flexicoil trucks delivered almost twice the pulling power of their GP counterparts, proving ideal for demanding assignments in helper, yard, transfer and heavy freight service.
