23' Mengercat My drop keel is gone. | SailNet Community
Dec 10, 2024 · Essentially it's a rectangle that fits in the trunk and pivots on the lower forward corner -- not likely a NACA foil shape. Sometimes people find a large sheet of heavy-gauge metal and cut it to fit. If it's too heavy it might be difficult to raise, but …
Catalina 30 Rudder - SailNet Community
Dec 15, 2011 · How about my elliprical rudder? Benefits include: backs easily to port or starboard, point higher / more lift lift from a NACA 012 hydrofoil cross-section, lighter helm... especially while motoring, turn in a tighter radius. Built better than OEM quality materials.... including an all stainless shaft and web. Competitively priced too.
Building a Rudder for 23' boat - SailNet Community
Sep 11, 2008 · Given that the rudder is a stockless design, being held on by pintles and gudgeons, I think you'll be fine with making a rudder up that way. I would use two 3/4" pieces of ply though, not 5/8" if your goal is a rudder 1.5" thick. You'll want to shape the rudder to a NACA profile, and then glass over the wood and fair it with thickened epoxy.

A cruiser is less concerned with performance and the attendant limitations caused by draft is a different ...
Good boat designs for sails windward | SailNet Community
Jan 17, 2010 · * Fin keel with NACA foil profile: the deeper and narrower the better. Deep narrow fins w/ bulbs is the trend. * Spade rudder, likewise a lifting foil. Possibly dual rudders to keep the foil vertical when heeled. * Perhaps non-intuitive: slow boats may point better than fast ones.

Islander 28 new sails? - SailNet Community
Feb 10, 2014 · We have been enjoying our I-28 with the suit of sails it came with. A 135 and a 150 and the main with a "shelf". No tears or major flaws but I am guessing they are at least 20 years old. Thinking about new sails I asked Hood to spec out a new head sail and got back a "boilerplate" quote for a...
