The N71 is a serious "long way round" route from Killarney to Cork. A quick look at the map easily reveals that the N22 is a direct route, but even then, it's still a "long way round" route for other traffic that would go this way.

Glengarriff is worth some time between the nature reserve and Garnish Island. The most scenic parts of the N71 are between Killarney and Glengarriff. After that, you need to get off the main road a bit.

Where the N71 secondary national road meets the Caha Mountain range, a historic, long, hand-cut tunnel ensures a dramatic entrance to Bonane from the Cork side. It is soon followed by three much shorter tunnels cut into the hillside.
