The primary hapū for this marae Ngāti Pare and Ngāti Te Mihinga hapū of Ngāti Hikairo. Mōkai Kāinga is also connected to Waikato-Tainui tribal confederation. The whare tipuna is Ko Te Mōkai.

It maintains 150 māra kai (garden plots) across two sections of land for Māori and non-Māori whānau. And its’ clientele aren’t just the homeless and the needy, even well-off local families tend to the garden plots, they of course pay a fee.

Mōkai Kainga Māori Trust is continuing its great work in the community by extending the existing māra kai project to the Sisters of Compassion Soup Kitchen in Wellington. Māori and non-Māori are being encouraged to give back to the community that has served them so well.

Mōkai marae is located just off Tirohanga Road, in Mōkai, about 27 km northwest of Taupō. Its principal hapū are Ngāti Hā, Ngāti Moekino, Ngāti Parekaawa, Ngāti Tarakaiahi, Ngāti Te Kohera and Ngāti Wairangi of the iwi Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

Uncle Robert founded the Mokai Kāinga Māori Centre Charitable Trust in Wellington, a community garden initiative to assist the homeless in regaining their footing. His team also worked hard to restore the Owhiro Stream's longfin eel population after severe weather and pollution rendered it uninhabitable in 2017.
