The primary hapū for this marae Ngāti Pare and Ngāti Te Mihinga hapū of Ngāti Hikairo. Mōkai Kāinga is also connected to Waikato-Tainui tribal confederation. The whare tipuna is Ko Te Mōkai.

It maintains 150 māra kai (garden plots) across two sections of land for Māori and non-Māori whānau. And its’ clientele aren’t just the homeless and the needy, even well-off local families tend to the garden plots, they of course pay a fee.

Uncle Robert founded the Mokai Kāinga Māori Centre Charitable Trust in Wellington, a community garden initiative to assist the homeless in regaining their footing.
