The company introduced the Memorex 630, an IBM 2311 plug-compatible disk drive, in 1968. Memorex sold the 630 to end users of IBM mainframes and connected to their systems thru an IBM 2841 storage control unit.

Memorex shipped the Memorex 630, the first HDD which was plug compatible to an IBM model 2311. Its shipment marked the start of independent competition (Plug Compatible Manufacturers or PCMs) for HDDs attached to IBM systems.

The actual drive was produced by Memorex - a model 660-2 a - and OEM'd by DEC, who added interface electronics. A maximum of 8 drives were supported per controller. Notes. a - There is some disagreement among sources; some claim it was a 660-1.
