The Maico all-terrain bikes of the seventies were very successful at races. For the street, they built the MD 50, the MD 125 and the MD 250, all with a special intake (Drehschieber = turning disk with hole for better timing of fresh air/gas mixture).

Unbeeindruckt von der ansonsten vorherrschenden deutschen Üppigkeit erwies sich die erstmals 1967 vorgestellte MD 50 als zierliche Sportmaschine, obwohl sie von der MD 125 "herunterentwickelt" wurde. Eine Besonderheit ist der Drehschieber-Motor, welcher anfangs mit 5 Gängen und 5,5 PS bei 8.000u/min aufwarten konnte.
