Conrail's yard slugs, the 4 axle MT4 and 6 axle MT6 were rebuild from ALCO units to perform low speed switching duties. Most of the MT4s were retired by the end of Conrail's era, but, after a truck swap, the MT6s served on for their new owners.

In 1978 and 1979, Conrail decided to construct a fleet of slugs using worn-out Alco RS-11, RSD12, and RSD-15 units. Conrail removed the diesel engine, generator, and cab from the original units. The underframe, trucks, traction motors, and blowers remained.

Conrail continued to use these locomotives into the 1980s. This album also includes Conrail's slug units made from Alco products, and the RS3m, Penn Central and Conrail's rebuilt RS3 roadswitchers.

Dec 19, 2024 · An MT6 yard slug, rebuilt from an Alco RSD12! Built as PRR 6872 in March 1958. It later became Penn Central 6872, Conrail 6936, Conrail 1102, and then CSX 1006.

May 15, 2022 · The SD38 looks great, but the MT6 Slug is just AWESOME. From the Alco hood notches to the working class lights, it makes me wish JR would put out more Slugs/Mates if this is gonna be the quality. Rated 5 out of 5

Jun 24, 2021 · I did some looking and from what I can tell Conrail only used GP10 rebuilds mated to MT4 slugs, and only the SD38s with the MT6 slugs... I have not come across any oddball units being wired for "mother" service. Can anybody think of a unit other then a GP10 or SD38 mated to a slug for Conrail?
