Jan 24, 2022 · Based on my experience my two lychee Trees (Mauritius and Bruster) grow well at my location. They are more attractive and much easier to cultivate overall than my Mango Trees. The flavor is indeed highly reminiscent of lychee. It has the very rich flavor of lychee, and even has a lychee-like sour note to it. It definitely possesses flavor components of a lychee profile but those particular flavor notes are not necessarily in the same proportion.

Sep 6, 2021 · A dry fall and winter will help the lychee enter maximum dormancy and make it more cold tollerent. I say give it a shot. I would recommend Emperor or Brewster as the varieties to test. Early blooming varieties such as Mauritius or Sweet Heart will not work in the colder places. You WILL need to protect the tree from some of your extreme cold.

I have had longans conk out on me in those temps but not lychee, thus I have always been confused when people say lychee cant tolerate cold weather when they are more tolerant than mango.

Mar 10, 2025 · Speaking of names, the Hak Ip name is a mislabel here in Florida. The real Hak Ip (Black Leaf) in China has very different charicteristics. For example the real Hak Ip has very few shrunken seeds, crisp flesh that does not leak juice, and medium sized fruit (none of these are true of the lychee going by Hak Ip in Florida).
