This route is now paved all the way to Loon Lake. From there you can continue to take the original route through Wentworth Springs or take the Ellis Creek Trail from Loon Lake to the Rubicon Trail. From Highway 50, turn North on Highway 49 towards Auburn.

Experience this 30.6-mile out-and-back trail near Homewood, California. Generally considered a challenging route. This trail is great for camping and off-road driving, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through August. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

The Rubicon Trail is normally run west to east (traveling east to west is referred to as “running backwards”). The western end of the Rubicon Trail has two trailheads. The true trailhead is located at the Wentworth Springs campground, while the more popular trailhead is at Loon Lake.

The road across the two dams at Loon Lake are open to winter motorized recreation. We at RTF fully support the enforcement of the driving off the trail and resource damage laws. Winter run off is a great concern along the Rubicon. A motto we have heard is "Make dust not mud." If you can put off your trip until the trail dries, please do so.

Came in from Loon Lake and camped 1 night at Buck and 1 night Rubicon Springs. If you go slow and choose the right lines you will minimize damage. There are bypasses for the obstacles like Soup Bowl and Little Sluice but much of the actual trail does not.

The most common direction the Rubicon is run is from west to east from Loon Lake to Lake Tahoe. An alternative (and more challenging) route starts at Wentworth Springs and meets up with the Loon Lake entrance at Ellis Creek.
