Amongst the most difficult routes the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) inherited at the 1923 grouping was between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, featuring intense working over hilly terrain and a route with many twists and turns.

Feb 8, 2006 · Trials found that a combination of a 5¾in diameter blastpipe top and 3 taper blocks worked best. This combination was made standard for the remaining locomotives of the P2 class, and was also used on 2001 when it eventually had its poppet valve gear replaced.

Modelling data for the P2 design and a modified design with a LNER class V2 type pony truck was published in early 2013. The computer modelling showed acceptable dynamics and the project to build 2007 was officially launched in September 2013 at the A1 Convention.
