Jan 4, 2020 · This 48 cm high mask, dating from the 19th dynasty, comes from the tomb of Sennedjem in Deir el-Medineh. This village, which in ancient times was called “Set Maât her imenty Ouaset” (the “Place of Maât (Truth) in the West of Thebes”) was founded at the beginning of the 18th dynasty under the reign of Thutmosis Iᵉʳ.

Khonsu (Ancient Egyptian: ḫnsw; also transliterated Chonsu, Khensu, Khons, Chons, Khonshu, or Konshu; Coptic: Ϣⲟⲛⲥ, romanized: Shons) is an ancient Egyptian god of the Moon. His name means 'traveller', and this may relate to the perceived nightly travel of the Moon across the sky.

It is likely that the mummy masks of Khonsu and Sennedjem have been exchanged by accident. The funerary equipment of the father, kept in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, includes a mask depicting a face with soft, almond-shaped features and a faint smile, wearing a band of lotus flowers over the head.

The Servitor in the Place of Truth, Khonsu, the son of Sennedjem and Iineferty, was buried in his father's tomb. His mummy, covered by a mummy mask and laid in the wooden inner coffin, indicates that he was between fifty and sixty years old at his death.
