The KV tanks were known for their heavy armour protection during the early stages of the war, especially during the first year of the German invasion of the Soviet Union. In certain situations, even a single KV-1 or KV-2 supported by infantry could halt German formations.

The KV-2 saw action during the early stages of World War II, particularly during the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. While its powerful gun could destroy enemy tanks and bunkers with ease, its slow speed and mechanical problems made it vulnerable on the battlefield.

German reports spoke of the KV-2’s armor plates glowing red after repeated strikes from the 50mm AP shells skipping off the 110mm armor on the turret front, and 75mm armor on the hull front and turret sides.

The new KV-3 was fitted with a supercharged version of the V-2 tank engine, straight off the drawing boards. This time it worked, and with strengthened suspension and transmission, the tank had completed 1985km (1233 miles) by 22 June.
