One of sixteen oil-fired Ja’s built by the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow, No. 1275 was completed in 1951 and entered service in June of the following year. It carried the maker’s number 27104.

The NZR JA class was a class of fifty-one 4-8-2 steam locomotives operated by the New Zealand Railways Department (NZR).

JA 1275 was the only one of the three to avoid being scrapped. This locomotive (JA 1275) was purchased by Les Hostick in 1968 and transported to the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society (NZR&LS) Waikato Branch’s Te Awamutu Railway Museum where it was on static display under a rudimentary shelter until 1994.

That last locomotive, J A 1274, was both the last steam locomotive built for, and by, NZR. The class was intended for the far more extensive fast passenger trains that existed in the South Island before the introduction of Fiat railcars in 1956 …
