It's never explained why Asgore can't recognize the human (after all, he's seen humans before), but here's my headcanon: Monster SOULs are made from compassion, and they can vaguely sense it in others.

During the fight, the human is able to rescue the souls of monsters Asriel took, including Asgore. After making Asriel stop fighting, he breaks the Barrier, allowing Asgore and the others to go outside of the Underground.

Asgore is the penultimate boss (or final, if having already fought Photoshop Flowey) in the Neutral and Pacifist routes and is fought at the end of New Home by the Barrier. Asgore uses fire magic and his trident, with some of his fire-based attacks being similar to Toriel's, though his are more damaging and have more complex patterns.
